Introduction to the Holy Bible

Thousands of years old and billions of copies sold, the Holy Bible is perhaps the most famous book of all time. However, many who traverse its pages may give up well before the end, frustrated and confused. In this brief overview of the Bible, we will endeavour to summarise the major components in each of its sixty-six (66) books and provide a useful mud map to readers.

First things first, what does the title Holy Bible mean? The word ‘Holy’ conveys the idea of separation and ‘Bible’ means book. Simply put, Holy Bible means ‘separate book.’ This book is distinguished from other literature because it:

  1. Claims to be God’s words
  2. Provides a method of salvation from death
  3. Has a great diversity of subject matter
  4. Spans all of human history within its pages, including prophecies of the future
  5. Employs a wide variety of literary techniques and languages

We are nearly ready to begin our journey through the Bible but first we need to read the itinerary. Below is a notated version of the table of contents, it may be helpful to mark it into your own Bible.

"All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness" 2 Tim 3:16
